E05 - Cold Process Kitchen & Laundry Soap Workshop

This class is included in the Essential CP Soap Course.

It includes 2 projects:

• Kitchen bar soap for washing dishes, veggies, fruits
• Laundry Soap Powder

Cold Process Kitchen Dish Soap Benefits:

• Long-Lasting: Solid dish soap bars often last longer than liquid dish soaps because they are concentrated and less likely to be overused. This can make them more economical in the long run.
• Effective Cleaning: Despite their natural formulation, cold process dish soaps can be very effective at cutting through grease and grime. The natural oils used in the soap create a rich lather that helps clean dishes thoroughly.
• Moisturizing for Hands: The natural oils and butters used in cold process soap can help to moisturize and protect your hands while washing dishes, unlike many commercial dish soaps that can be drying.
• Non-Toxic: Cold process dish soaps do not contain synthetic additives, preservatives, or artificial colors. This makes them safer for your home, especially if you have young children or pets who may come into contact with the soap.
• Versatile Use: Cold process dish soaps can often be used for other cleaning tasks around the home, such as cleaning countertops or even as hand soap, making them a versatile addition to your cleaning supplies.
• No Synthetic Detergents: Cold process dish soaps are free from synthetic detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), which can be harsh on the skin and potentially harmful to the environment.

Natural Laundry Powder Benefits:

• Gentle on Fabrics: The natural and mild ingredients in handmade laundry powders can be gentler on fabrics, helping to preserve the integrity and color of clothes over time. This is especially beneficial for delicate fabrics and baby clothes.
• Hypoallergenic: Many handmade laundry powders are hypoallergenic, making them suitable for people with sensitive skin, allergies, or conditions like eczema. The absence of synthetic additives reduces the risk of skin irritation.
• Non-Toxic: Handmade laundry powders are free from the toxic chemicals found in some commercial detergents, such as sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances. This is safer for your home environment, especially if you have pets or small children.
• Cost-Effective: Making your own laundry powder can be more cost-effective in the long run. The basic ingredients are often inexpensive and can be bought in bulk, leading to savings compared to regularly purchasing commercial detergents.

Duration: 2 hours

Capacity: 2-8 people

Knowledge required: Beginner-friendly, no soap making experience is required.

What you'll make and take:

• A batch of Kitchen soap, which is 4-5 bars. (a multi-cavity soap mold included)
• A bag of laundry soap powder about 1 pound.

What to bring:

• A face mask (required for handing the caustic materials for about 10-15 minutes)
• A thick towel for wrapping and keeping the soap insulated on your way home
• We will provide the disposable apron, gloves and goggles, but feel free to bring yours.

What you will learn and receive at this workshop:

1. Science and knowledge of cold process soap making for household cleaning.
2. Dealing with Lye safely and properly
3. Tools and Materials/Ingredients required and benefitical for dish and laundry cleaning.
4. Basic coloring and scenting skills.
5. Step-by-Step cold process soap making procedure.
6. A handout with the recipe and detailed instruction

What you need to know about the workshop/ class:

• We will be working with a chemical called "Sodium hydroxide (lye) " (Lye is used in the saponification process to turn oil into soap - no sodium hydroxide remains in the finished product after curing.) Please be extra careful while handling LYE in class.
• THIS WORKSHOP IS FOR ADULTS ONLY and it requires your full attention while making the cold process soap. 
• No pets or kids allowed in the workshop for safety's sake.  
• If you're a high school student and would like to attend, you'd need to provide approval by your parent or guardian.
• No walk-ins or sit-ins will be allowed for safety's sake.

Safety Rules and Regulations for the Store and Workshop - Mandatory for Everyone's Protection. Any violation may result in dismissal.

• If you are unwell, please stay home and notify us to reschedule your workshop.
• It is strongly recommended that individuals who have not received the Covid-19 vaccination wear a FACE MASK throughout the workshop. Please bring your own mask, or you can purchase one from the workshop. (We no longer provide free face masks due to shortages and increased costs. Thank you for your understanding.) If you are unable to wear a face mask for any reason, please reconsider signing up for the workshop.
• Wear an apron, gloves, and eye protection (glasses or safety goggles) while making soaps. We will provide these items, or you may bring your own.
• Thoroughly wash your hands with soap before and after the workshop.
• Prohibited items include weapons, drugs, and alcohol within the store and workshop premises.

Registration and Cancellation Policy (Please read carefully):

• To receive a refund, a cancellation notice must be sent at least 2 business days before the scheduled class.
• Starting from April 11th, 2023, a cancellation fee of 3.5% of the total amount paid will be deducted from any refund issued.
• Cancellations made within 2 business days before the class will not receive a refund but will be issued a store credit valid for attending a future workshop within 6 months.
• Cancellations made within 24 hours of the workshop or no-shows will not receive any refund or credit.
• No refund or credit will be issued if you are dismissed for breaking our classroom safety rules.
• In the event that the workshop cannot be conducted as scheduled, you may choose to transfer to another date or receive a full refund.

Accident Waiver and Release of Liability:

• By participating in this activity or event, I assume all risks involved. For parents registering children under 18 years of age, I give my consent for their participation.
• This includes, but is not limited to, any risks arising from negligence or carelessness on the part of the individuals or entities involved, as well as risks associated with dangerous products, materials, or defective equipment or property under their ownership, maintenance, or control, or due to their potential liability without fault.
